Westmead Hawk is a star greyhound that is not yet getting the public recognition he deserves.

He is now odds on for a second successive Derby that would surely see him mentioned in the same breath as Scurlogue Champ and Ballyregan Bob. Indeed there is something reminiscent of Scurlogue Champ about him – he loves to come from behind and rarely hits the front until the home straight.

He’s a tough and intelligent dog too, he took a hefty old bump on Tuesday night in his quarter final but was strong enough to power through to another success. Trainer Nick Savva has a strong hand on this year’s £100,000 final as Westmead Hawk’s half brother Westmead Joe has also made it through to the semi’s. The pair could clash in a titanic final.

The Hawk though is one odds-on shot we won’t be taking on.
