The Flat Jockeys Championship is certain to see a new name this year – and up until Saturday Robert Winston was as short as 5/4 to win it before breaking his jaw in an horrific incident at Ayr which ended his title hopes in a split second.

Frankie Dettori’s hopes of a repeat success have also been thwarted by injury and the news on Monday was that his comeback has been delayed three weeks.

The Jockeys Championship, settled on winners, offers a couple of opportunities. Firstly, second favourite Seb Sanders. Although 15 winners adrift of Jamie Spencer, he could easily make up that ground if his retained stable (Sir Mark Prescott) have a good Autumn campaign. Prescott often tries to run up quick sequences with his horses and that could be worth 6 or so winners on its own.

Secondly, and more speculatively, Ryan Moore, is of interest at 50/1 on Betfair. He’s getting plenty of rides, has quality with Richard Hannon as boss, and travels all over.

So the advice is Seb Sanders at around 7/4 and Ryan Moore at 50/1.
